The name raises an eyebrow. But spend a session on the Electric High Chair and the association shifts entirely — what remains is not the name’s dark connotation but the charge of the work itself. This is apparatus that wakes the body up.
Where the Wunda Chair asks the practitioner to stand, kneel, or sit low and push the pedal down, the Electric High Chair elevates the seat so that the legs hang free and the pedal — now operating at a different angle entirely — works the body through a range of motion that the low chair simply cannot reach. Seated upright, spine long, the practitioner presses and resists through hip extension, hip flexion, and the full arc of the leg in space. The back and arms, supported by the chair’s structure, are freed to do their own work — or to stabilise, which is work of a different and demanding kind.
The result is an apparatus that challenges the hip flexors and extensors, the deep abdominals, and the muscles of the posterior chain from a position that is simultaneously supported and exacting. Exercises that are difficult to access from the floor or the mat become clear on the Electric High Chair. The elevated seat changes the geometry of the work in ways that produce different results — not better or worse than the Wunda Chair, but different, and in the classical system, necessary.
It is also one of the more accessible pieces of apparatus for practitioners for whom lowering to and rising from the floor presents difficulty. The elevated position means the work can begin from the chair itself — which is not a compromise but a considered use of what the apparatus offers.
